    It’s A…

When the time neared when we would find out what the gender of our baby was going to be, people would ask us if we were going to find out, or wait until the baby was born. My response every time was: “There are enough surprises in pregnancy, this one isn’t going to be one of them” Justin (being like a lot of daddy-to-be’s) really wanted a boy, and I dreamt it would be a girl. Growing up with 2 sisters who are my forever best friends and seeing the relationship I have with my mom, it seemed the desirable choice (even though a boy would be quite fun). We…

    it’s really happening: second trimester

I had heard stories about how awesome second trimester was for people. Morning sickness gone, energy back, fun cravings and a “back to normal” attitude. To prove that every pregnancy is different, it seemed as though this alien/parasite (a name my mother cringes at every time I say it), wanted to do his/her own thing (much like myself) and my morning sickness/vomiting finally subsided at about 17 weeks (a little over 4 months). Way past its due time, but thankful none-the-less. 1. How big is the baby? I’m 18 weeks and baby is the size of a sweet potato (or for the dad-to-be. the size of a Ben and Jerry’s…

    It’s really happening

Yep, no joke folks, Justin and I are going to become a threesome in less than a year and it’s been one hell of a ride so far! I’ve heard about morning sickness from others and how much it sucks, but I can honestly tell you that it means nothing until you actually go through it. With 6 weeks of what felt like the never-ending stomach flu, I’m now in a place where it’s manageable and can actually have “real food” (as in anything but saltine crackers and ginger ale) without throwing up (I will never have sour patch kids candy again). I can’t go into crazy weird food yet…

family vacation: cabo san lucas 2014

Since we were little, my sisters and I looked forward to our annual family vacation where we could chill, hang with each other and eat everything all day and all night. This year the location was set in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and it was one of the best yet. With all of us spread across the country, this year was especially important as getting together isn’t as easy as it used to be. It was also +1 as my sister’s husband joined us for the first time. Our week-long trip included naps on the beach, pool time, mescal tasting and a sailboat sunset cruise. In a word, it was…

    Homesick

I’m 4 blocks away from a coffee shop, nail salon, boutique shops, bars and a neighborhood grocer. It doesn’t get below freezing here or above 95 degrees. I have friends that live here. The ocean, wine country and some of the best restaurants reside here. I should be happy. But I’m homesick. In fact, I’m having a hard time adjusting. “Maybe you had to leave in order to really miss a place; maybe you had to travel to figure out how beloved your starting point was.”  ― Jodi Picoult, Handle With Care Coming from Texas, the big city of San Francisco is much more of a change than I had anticipated. I’ve…

10 reasons the World Cup is better than the Superbowl

I know some of you are already rolling your eyes at this blog post title and I accept that. Soccer isn’t for everyone. My husband, a HUGE football (and 49er) fan doesn’t think soccer as a sport holds a candle to football, and I get it. Football is an American sport that really isn’t played anywhere else, and that’s huge (there is rugby, but let’s be honest, it doesn’t really compare). However, I think the World Cup is on another level. So with that, let me present to you the 10 reasons the World Cup is better than the Superbowl (in my opinion of course, and with some GIF’s…

    Father’s Day Cards

When I was younger, my dad was the disciplinarian. He was the one that made sure we knew it was not OK to be up past bedtime. The one that made sure we knew how valuable education was, or we would be doing rounds at the hospital during summer break. As I get older and older, I’ve realized how intelligent, dedicated and loving my dad really is. Now he’s one I turn to for advice, and he surprises me every time as I find myself thinking about what he says. Weird how that happens, huh? So with Father’s Day being this Sunday, I thought I’d  share some fun father’s day…

what the hills y’all: an anniversary in Santa Cruz

What the Hills Y’all: Adventures of a Texas girl living in San Francisco The first time I went to Santa Cruz, it was with a friend of mine and we took the doggies, watched pelicans nose dive into the ocean and hiked a forest. So when Justin and I were trying to decide where to go for our 3rd year anniversary, Santa Cruz was a place I wanted to explore a bit more. This was a fairly important year for us with a lot happening that definitely tested our marriage. Moving to a new city, leaving friends and family, getting out of my comfort zone and adjusting to a new…

    are you the favorite?

“I don’t have a favorite, I love you three the same”, my parents would always answer. Growing up with 2 younger sisters, we would always question who was our parents “favorite” and would always get the same response. Being incredibly different in personality, actions, feelings and even lifestyle, it would baffle us that our parents didn’t have a favorite. For mothers, studies show that one of the biggest predictors of favoritism has to do with similarity. I know growing up, my sister was adventurous and a bit of a risk-taker, which my mom could relate to as a young teenager. I don’t know about fathers, but I can tell you…

    family matters

When I was younger there was a time I couldn’t wait to be as far away from my family as possible. Today that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Being away from family is one of the hardest things about moving to another city (let alone another state or even another country). It’s tough. It pulls at your heart-strings. For a close family as mine is, it’s overwhelming. My parents came to see me for the first time since moving to San Francisco and I was beyond excited to see them. Days before I was planning what sights to show them, what food spots they had to try (horchata ice…
