zzz…

I am not a morning person. I’ve never been one. I remember when I first started in the working world people would tell me that I won’t be waking up at noon anymore because I need to get up at 8am every morning for work and my body will just get used to it. I’ve been in the working world for over 10 years now and I can still sleep until noon on the weekends. Boo-ya.

It’s the same routine every morning. The alarm goes off at a ridiculously early hour, and I snooze it for about an hour to prolong the time I need to get up, the inevitable. I learned pretty quickly where the little snooze button is on my phone. I don’t even have to open my eyes to stop the noise, I’ve got it down pat. My husband is the same way. He has his phone on his side and snoozes it until the very last-minute. It’s an everyday battle in the house. We also have an alarm that goes off on the corner of the room that is supposed to encourage us to physically get up, walk to the other side of the room and turn it off/snooze it. Sounds good in theory, except they included a remote control…

My dog Mya even knows that we are not morning people. When she was little she would come wake me up at 8 or 9am to go out. She quickly learned that I don’t get up that early, and has since either snuggled beside me until about 11am or wait patiently downstairs under some kind of sun ray until I get up. She’s become a night owl and gets her second wind around 10pm and wants to play. In the morning she won’t leave her bed until about 10 or 11am. I love her for that.

So needless to say I value my sleep. It’s the two days out of the week where I don’t have to fight my body to get up. So when people want to do brunch, shopping or any other activity that requires me leaving my bed, I have a rule- nothing starts until I get up (if you want me included). Sure I’ve missed out on some things over the years, but I don’t care. It’s such a great feeling to not have to get up for those two days. If I can stay in bed, which usually consists of me sitting up, legs folded, with my comforter on my lower half and a computer on my lap, those are the best days. My husband also makes breakfast. I’ll get out of bed for that 🙂

I’ve always been a night owl. I go to bed between midnight and 2am. I’m ok with that. My husband is the same way. God help us if we were opposite. If he got up bright and early with energy and a smile, I think I might punch him. When I was little I would get mad at my mom for getting me up early to go to school. She started bribing me with hot chocolate and that seemed to work for a while. I’d rather get things done the night before and go to bed super late than get up in the morning. It’s just the way I am. I work best at night and seem to get more creative and productive when the sun goes down.

I envy those morning people sometimes. You guys have it easy, the day flows naturally to you. The office opens early, meetings are scheduled for 9am and breakfast stops at 10am. I don’t remember the last time I was up early enough for breakfast (unless it’s served all day). I get that more things get done the earlier the day starts. Even though I understand it, I don’t think it’s necessary. My ideal work day would be 11-8pm. I get to sleep in, and be most productive.

So I raise my coffee cup to sleep, I’ll see you tonight 🙂
