    5 tips for surviving Coachella

Surviving music festivals takes time, planning, stamina and a certain mindset that isn’t easy to come by. My husband and I are no strangers to music festivals as we’ve done ACL (Austin City Limits) twice. If you follow me on instagram and facebook, you know this was our first time attending Coachella. Coachella is a huge music festival in April that draws over 100,000 people each year. Featuring artists of all kinds of genres from hip hop to EDM, it appeals to all music lovers. It’s held in Indio, CA, which makes it susceptible to dust and high temperatures. Looking to attend next year? Here are 5 tips for surviving…

    family matters

When I was younger there was a time I couldn’t wait to be as far away from my family as possible. Today that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Being away from family is one of the hardest things about moving to another city (let alone another state or even another country). It’s tough. It pulls at your heart-strings. For a close family as mine is, it’s overwhelming. My parents came to see me for the first time since moving to San Francisco and I was beyond excited to see them. Days before I was planning what sights to show them, what food spots they had to try (horchata ice…

Is Frozen the new Little Mermaid?

I can’t get that song out of my head. It doesn’t help that Jimmy Fallon did one of his classic ” kindergarten toys” rendition with Idina Menzel herself (or is her name Adele Dazeem?). The hit song “Let It Go” from Disney’s Oscar-winning film Frozen is all over the place, and I haven’t even seen the movie. When I was little, I wanted to be Ariel from The Little Mermaid. When we moved into a bigger house growing up, we got a pool. Soon enough, the Disney movie resided in that pool and we let our imagination soar (or paddle, which was probably more realistic). The shallow end with steps were…

What kind of work environment do you thrive in?

Last night Justin and I sat down to finally watch Wolf of Wall Street. We usually make an effort to watch the Oscar nominated films before the awards show, but some always seem to fall through the cracks. This movie was one of those. In watching it, I couldn’t help but think of the fact that I would never thrive in that kind of environment. That high-strung, fast-paced, do what it takes, this-is-you-life kind of environment. It’s the same reason why I could never make it in New York City (I would be that girl crying in the corner as people walk past telling me to get out-of-the-way). Do you…

why dancing is the answer to everything

“Seriously, you can’t play that song one more time or I might lose it” “Hold on, just one more time, I have to get this one last 8 count down” There are songs my husband can’t listen to because I have reached the maximum number of replays in his book. Artists like Beyonce, Usher and Britney (back in the day when she was good) have fallen victim of this terrible end result. When I taught hip hop, I would comb through YouTube to find interesting choreography, ways to make your body move to feel the music in the best way possible. Dancing is the ultimate way to do that. it…

I listen to your kid’s music

“We’re getting too old for this”, I tell my husband after attending the ACL festival a couple of years ago. We were filthy. Open park + rain = mud. Mud = very unhappy Sandra. My husband and I will be at Coachella this year. For those of your who aren’t familiar with it, it’s a 3 days music festival with DJ’s and musicians including Calvin Harris, Disclosure,  and Pharrell Williams (among others). We are probably going to be the oldest people there, and I don’t care. For all you parents out there, this is the festival your kids are going to. I listen to your kid’s music. I’ll be the…

    basic beauty in 5 steps

It’s amazing how little men know about women. Like giving a women 5 minutes to get ready, or telling her that we have to leave “now” or we’ll miss the appointment/tour/bus/cab. Basic beauty is where it’s at. It’s simple, doesn’t take a lot of time, and makes you feel like singing “I woke up like this” after you’re done. No, it doesn’t take 5 minutes (no need to set unrealistic expectations), but it will get you out of the house looking beautiful. Here’s how to do it:   Step 1: use a BB cream instead of foundation. It moisturizes, evens skin tone and provides coverage all in one. I’ve been…

what the hills y’all: why you should go local

Grocery shopping is more than just getting the food you need for the week, it’s an experience. When I lived in Dallas, my sister and I would go grocery shopping together and catch up on everything. There are different kinds of shoppers, you see, and my sister and I were the same. HEB in Houston will always be my favorite grocery store. It’s clean, have both mass and specialty foods and was like a half grocer, half dinner pick-up. In San Francisco, it’s a different story. The city is packed with places to find fresh food in varieties of organic, vegan, gluten-free and any other version of food you’d like.…

    it’s always been there

I knew it all along and didn’t realize it. I remember growing up I had a journal. A place where I could write down anything and everything that was on my mind. At the time, it was filled with ideas of marriage with Leonardo DiCaprio or Jonathan Taylor Thomas. I even cut out heart shapes from pictures I would see in BOP! Magazine. It was my escape from boring reality. From not being the “cool kid” or “pretty girl” in school. I would write about my school crushes that I didn’t have the guts to talk about in person to other people and how I felt about a fight with…

what the hills y’all: this is where rich people live

What the Hills Y’all: Adventures of a Texas girl living in San Francisco One thing I’ve come to learn about San Francisco is that there is an endless amount of things to see. There is so much history, fascinating architecture and a whole street where rich people live. Justin and I have been taking advantage of the awesome service, howaboutwe.com, where you can book a customized date for two (read about our beer tasting date at Upcider for more information). This past weekend we did a walking tour of Pac Heights, a neighborhood in San Francisco with all the charm, personality, and so much history of San Francisco. Our tour…
