    in review: farmers market

I love the farmers market. My husband and I decided to go one afternoon just to do something on Sunday and I fell in love with it. I’ve been going ever since. I love the feeling of being able to support local farmers, get fresh fruits and veggies and even herbs. The outdoor “sheds” is where you find all the produce, but the indoor market sells food, sweets and locally made soaps, clothes, jewelry, olive oil and even wine. Some to take note of: – Pecan Lodge has gotten some rave reviews for its BBQ and there is always a line around the corner during lunch time. – Fudgemakers make…

    in review: pozo mercado

Just when you think you’ve been to every place on McKinney Ave, a new place opens up. Enter Pozo Mercado, the “white house” of McKinney Ave. No, it’s not short for “pozole”, the Mexican dish. It is a new Mexican restaurant comfortably seated next to Standard Pour and owned by the same people. The restaurant has an outdoor patio, a must for people watching. The super chill vibe is also great to hang out with friends after work (so you can make fun of the people you’re watching). The food is definitely more Mexican and less Tex-Mex, which in Texas is tough to find. So when I was invited to taste…

10 mexican foods everyone should try (at least once)

After spending a week in Mexico and enjoying all the sights and family time, I have to say that one of my favorite parts is the food and drinks that can only be done right by Mexico (cold churros? not here!). Since I consider myself to be somewhat of an expert in Mexican cuisine (meaning I eat a lot of it), I thought I’d indulge you with my top 10 Mexican foods everyone should try (at least once). Let’s get started… 1. Raspados Translation: Shaved Ice Can often be found on the street at all hours of the day or night. With basic flavors like strawberry and orange, you can…

10 things I learned at a wine tasting class

I attended a wine tasting (I think they called it an “education” class) this past Sunday after buying a Groupon. It was hosted by Andy Gonzales, also known as the “DaVineGuy” at The Wine Therapist in Lakewood where they have a great variety of bottles to purchase. Andy looked a bit like John Tuturro and was super knowledgeable about wines, pairings and clearly loved talking about them. After 10 tastings and a plethora of information, here are 10 things I learned: 1. Never taste wine with cheese. The dairy actually clogs your palette’s ability to really taste the wine. At our class we had bread pieces and water. 2. If a…

what kind of grocery shopper are you?

Grocery shopping can be an enjoyable, relaxing experience or one that just falls short. I shop at Kroger most of the time and the company you have plays a big role. Let’s talk about it. I’ve come to the conclusion that you need to be picky about who you go grocery shopping with. I learned this the hard way so I thought I’d relay the information to you as a guide for your next shopping experience. I for one love going grocery shopping. Going down each aisle, seeing what’s new, crossing things off my list (when I have a list, which is rare, it’s usually in my head) and occasionally dancing to…

    in the kitchen

So I’m not the best cook. If anything, I get easily discouraged in the kitchen. I don’t know how people see it as relaxing or therapeutic. It’s a lot of work for the 10 minutes it takes for you to eat it. By the time you dice the vegetables, cook the meat, make the sauce and let it bake in the oven I’m already worn out. My expectations sky-rocket and I’m wanting this thing to be the best thing I’ve ever tasted. It’s not. That being said, I LOVE to try new recipes (opportunity to be creative) and surprising myself. Sometimes it turns out tasting great and looking ugly (like…
