    wednesday in review: avenue q

Have you heard of the Broadway show Avenue Q? If you haven’t, put it on your list to see. It’s won countless Tony Awards and is a laugh out loud show that covers all sorts of controversial topics- with puppets. Yep, this show has been called the “Sesame Street for adults” show with characters like Trekky Monster, Rod and Nicky (who resemble Cookie Monster and Bert and Ernie, by the way). There is even a Gary Coleman character who is the superintendent of a run-down neighborhood in New York city called Avenue Q. The story revolves around Princeton, a recent college grad looking to find his purpose in life. The…

    let’s talk: toner

Welcome to a new series on the blog that will cover all things beauty and answers questions about products, ingredients and the best trends out there! Let’s get started shall we? After working in the beauty industry in product development and marketing, you get to know a thing or two about products- how they work and what goes into making some of the best stuff out there. Working with chemists, fragrance houses, and even packaging engineers, there’s more to making this beauty stuff than we think. Toner is an astringent used to prep the skin for all the goodness that comes afterwards, i.e. makeup. It’s usually applied after cleansing and…

    in review: farmers market

I love the farmers market. My husband and I decided to go one afternoon just to do something on Sunday and I fell in love with it. I’ve been going ever since. I love the feeling of being able to support local farmers, get fresh fruits and veggies and even herbs. The outdoor “sheds” is where you find all the produce, but the indoor market sells food, sweets and locally made soaps, clothes, jewelry, olive oil and even wine. Some to take note of: – Pecan Lodge has gotten some rave reviews for its BBQ and there is always a line around the corner during lunch time. – Fudgemakers make…

    year two

Two years ago today I married the love of my life and decided to go on this rollercoaster ride together. This weekend we spent it in San Antonio at this adorable bed & breakfast (which we have decided may not be the best thing for us non-early morning people) and spent the day sightseeing and just walking alongside the Riverwalk. Today we get to open yet another bottle from the winery we got engaged at that was signed by some of our guests at our wedding. Another year has gone by and I could not have asked for a better person to spend it with. Thank you for being my…

    in review: pozo mercado

Just when you think you’ve been to every place on McKinney Ave, a new place opens up. Enter Pozo Mercado, the “white house” of McKinney Ave. No, it’s not short for “pozole”, the Mexican dish. It is a new Mexican restaurant comfortably seated next to Standard Pour and owned by the same people. The restaurant has an outdoor patio, a must for people watching. The super chill vibe is also great to hang out with friends after work (so you can make fun of the people you’re watching). The food is definitely more Mexican and less Tex-Mex, which in Texas is tough to find. So when I was invited to taste…

    mom

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! My mom is here with my sisters and I this weekend and we’ve had so much fun treating her to the spa, good food and all the “sister time” a mom could want. I know everyone says this, but I really believe I have the best mom in the world. She has become my friend, confidant, advisor and support. I feel lucky to be her daughter and I just hope I make her proud of me as I am so proud of her. My sisters and I are so close and she’s got a major part in making that happen. Coming…

10 mexican foods everyone should try (at least once)

After spending a week in Mexico and enjoying all the sights and family time, I have to say that one of my favorite parts is the food and drinks that can only be done right by Mexico (cold churros? not here!). Since I consider myself to be somewhat of an expert in Mexican cuisine (meaning I eat a lot of it), I thought I’d indulge you with my top 10 Mexican foods everyone should try (at least once). Let’s get started… 1. Raspados Translation: Shaved Ice Can often be found on the street at all hours of the day or night. With basic flavors like strawberry and orange, you can…

    my trip: mexico

My trip: Mexico! If you follow me on instagram you know that I just came back from beautiful Mexico. My parents decided to do a Mexico trip and invited me along. After a week of sightseeing and visiting family in Guadalajara, Guanajuato and Leon (the leather capital), I came back relaxed, happy and full. So much good food, fresh fruit waters (watermelon, melon) and beautiful landmarks had me thinking about the next time I want to come back. Since my husband couldn’t come along, this is one trip I look forward taking with him. Have you been to Guanajuato? What did you like the best?

    growing up Mexican and Italian

Growing up with two cultures heavily embedded in your everyday as well as living in a third completely different culture is a lot for a kid. My mother is a strong Mexican who came to the US when she married my dad and my dad is Italian who came to New York from Italy when he was a kid. So I’m first generation Mexican-Italian raised in the US. I’m a mutt. Now that I’m older, I can appreciate all the things my parents (especially my mom who really made an effort to embed her culture and traditions) did for us in order to have the most diversified life possible. Things…

    natural beauty

Are you a fan of novelas? I used to watch them growing up with my mom and sisters. We would be biting our teeth with our hearts pounding to see the drama unfold every day. “Arranque de Pasiòn, La Historia de Ela” is the newest Univision original series to hit the big screen of today: your computer. This online novela started on April 5th and releases 5 minute episodes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It features some of my favorite people like Kate Del Castillo, Gabriela Vergara and so sexy Carlos Ponce. The story line is about a competitive race car driver who encounters love, competition and all sorts of drama. Take…
