what the hills y’all: the redwood trees and blue ocean water of Santa Cruz
I have a friend here that has lived in the Bay Area for years, and would tell me stories of when she lived in Santa Cruz just so she could be by the water. On a rare Northern California day that was predicted to reach a high of 90 degrees and no rain, we decided to go to Santa Cruz and check out the forest known as Nisene Marks and the beautiful beach.
Our first stop was the forest, where we let our dogs off leash to roam and sniff while we walked, surrounded by nature at it’s best. The fresh, pollution-free air and faint scent of redwood trees was awesome. I could see why people go here to clear their head and re-focus. Mya had the biggest smile on her face as her tongue hanged on the side of her mouth.
Afterwards we went to the beach to hang out a bit and just stare at the ocean. There were sea lions swimming around, pelicans taking nose dives for food and not a rain drop in sight. The dogs were tired so no need to handle a leash, they just smelled, walked around and even plopped down on the sand to take a break.
it was wonderful to go out and explore. If you live in the Bay Area and haven’t checked out Santa Cruz, put it on your list. If for nothing else, there is a BBQ place that is supposed to be fantastic. We tried to go but they were out of bread (which would never happen in Texas), and then everything else shortly after. Guess that just gives me a reason to go back.
