Cirque du Soleil: Kooza

Cirque du Soleil

Welcome, welcome, welcome! Step right up ladies and gentleman and be prepared to be amazed by the traveling acrobatic production of Cirque du Soleil: Kooza!

Ok so you probably figured out that I went to go see Cirque du Soleil. The traveling show set up shop in downtown Dallas near Reunion Blvd in a big tent. I was so excited as I had always thought it was just in Vegas, but since it was in the city and the tickets were discounted via Living Social, it was hard not to pass up.

So we arrived, late.

After some missed turns, parking issues and finally walking over to the entrance, we missed the beginning 5 minutes of it. As I paced anxiously, waiting for the staff member to open the curtain, we were finally let in and made our way to our seats in the lower section.

The set up was magical. It almost seemed like you were transported to a new world full of color, animation and magic. The costumes were so beautifully creative, unique and artfully crafted. For a girl who loves all things creative, I was in heaven.

Even though the tent set up was a bit smaller than I expected, the acts were really great and I found myself holding my breath a couple of times:

There were contortionists doing things with their body that just wasn’t normal.

Magicians and clowns distracted us from set changes by taking “volunteer” audience members out of their comfort zone for the sake of laughs.

Hula hoop and high swing beauties had no fear of falling or tripping (a.k.a falling on your face).

Masculine men with undeniable strength jumped from rotating circle to circle or walked on a tight rope.

Group acts with people on stilts flipped backwards and were flown in the air with no reservation.

The acts were doing everything your parents told you NOT to do growing up. “Don’t jump on the bed!”, “You’re going to hurt yourself if you do another back flip”, “That swing is too high!”, “Get down from there!”

Yeah, all of that, these people did.

I couldn’t help smiling for the entire 2.5 hours. I felt like I was a little kid watching a circus show, only it wasn’t your Ringling Brothers circus that you went to as a kid. This one is much more sophisticated and beautifully artistic.

I now want to see ALL of these acts, and I’ve heard O is the best one since the tricks are done in the water. I also want a swing.

It was a great night and almost ended perfectly. Then a kitten got behind our car tire, then jumped inside the wheel barrel, making us take off the entire wheel to save it, only for the kitten to look at us and casually walk away. We also couldn’t get the tire back on.

No worries, the cat is fine. I however, hate cats now.
