What the Hills Y’all: Adventures of a Texas girl living in San Francisco

San Francisco has this thing about bags- they hate them. In fact, they hate them so much that they’ve banned the paper or plastic kind and request demand that you bring your own, preferably made out of cotton or otherwise environmentally friendly material. If you don’t, you will be charged $.10 with a side of shame.

This presents a problem for the slightly forgetful me. In Texas, people give bags out like they are candy. Stores will double bag for heavy items, and even attach an unused one at the grocery store to fulfill their stuff-20-bags-a-minute policy. Here, that would be like winning the lottery, or an excuse to rebel depending on your stance on the whole paper or plastic conundrum.  Here in San Francisco however, you’d be dreaming.

I’ve had to buy bags for $.10 and put shoes and even a dress in my purse since I’ve been here. Rule of thumb- always have a bag in your car, or be prepared to pay up.

Now, here’s the kicker with this whole no-bag policy. You can bring your own plastic or paper bag from another store. So in other words, you could shop outside of San Francisco and use those bags inside the city. A little confused? Yep, me too.

So, for all you people outside of San Francisco (or even outside of California), cherish your bags that you get for free. In other places, they are charging for them (insert shocker face).
